![]() The development of better roadways and railroads largely built to support war efforts made travel in the county easier and led to the increased development of neighboring communities. Throughout the Civil War and in the years following New Hanover County continued to expand. Today some of the ruins of these boat works remain and can bee seen from the Riverwalk. According to a Wilmington map the city included nearly 400 blocks of commercial residential and industrial buildings.Īcross the river where the Battleship is moored a commercial section of town had developed around the ferry landing and the banks of Eagle Island were filled with ship repair facilities and other industrial works. Better more established roads connected Wilmington to nearby plantations farms and settlements and Wilmington had grown exponentially stretching from Marstellar Street on the south to beyond Howard Street on the north side and east to 13 th Street. A map of downtown dated 1810 shows that while Wilmington hadnt stretched its borders significantly it had become more densely populated.īy 1856 the face of New Hanover County had changed. By the early 1800s the city was the largest in North Carolina but only encompassed an area from Wooster Street on the south to Campbell Street on the north and from the river east to Fifth Avenue. Through the late 18 th and early 19 th centuries Wilmington and surrounding farms and towns gained more residents but the city itself didnt expand its total land area by much. Or they could take the North East Road out of Wilmington and cross the river at a narrower point further upstream. Another ferry took passengers across to Brunswick Town south of Town Creek shoals but it was located far out of town. Once there it was a boggy swampy trek to another ferry across the Brunswick River then on down the Kings Highway to Charleston. Located at the foot of Market Street the ferrya flatboat towed by rowboats powered by slaves or indentured servantscrossed to Eagles Island near the Battleship North Carolina. passed through Wilmington and crossed the river on the Cape Fear River Ferry. Combine that with a zigzag route around creeks marshes and swamps and it was a daylong trip from any area more than five miles out of town.įrom the Colonial era until early last century those crossing the Northern colonies to Charleston S.C. These roads were muddy rough and hard on wagon wheels and axles. Many of the roads were corduroy roads made by laying a base of side-by-side logs perpendicular to the route covered with soil brush and more soil. ![]() Travel from outlying farms into Wilmington was an arduous task. Roads trails and cart paths connected to the few main routes funneling into town and were infrequently traveled except by locals to purchase supplies deliver goods or pick up shipments at the dock. Outside of Wilmington New Hanover County consisted largely of farms and a few plantations that were like Orton Plantation dedicated to growing rice. ![]() The “Road to New Bern” followed the track of modern-day Market Street out of town “Road to the Sound” appears to have followed Oleander Drive “Road to Brunswick Ferry” paralleled what is now 17 th Street and “Road to the North East” roughly traced the path of the Martin Luther King Jr. On his map Wilmington is a tight cluster of buildings a few streets and a handful of roads out of town. ![]() We still have a Liverpool Street actually.”īy 1769 Wilmington hadnt grown much as a map by acclaimed French cartographer and illustrator C.J. “Plus the early spelling of Princess Street Princes Street is a match to Liverpool. “One of Wilmingtons names early on was New Liverpool ” Tetterton says. After much research into the matter Beverly Tetterton local history librarian at the New Hanover County Library has settled on Liverpool as the inspiration for Wilmington. By 1736 Wilmington had expanded and included Front Mulberry (now Grace) Chestnut Red Cross King Queen and Nun streets but still sat in the shadow of Brunswick Towns larger port.Īlthough Wilmingtons design was fashioned after Brunswick Town the street names and layout are also similar to two other citiesPhiladelphia and Liverpool Englandso much so there is an ongoing dispute among historians about the initial designs. Surrounding the heart of Wilmington were homes and businesses and further out farms and plantations. A central street with a market Market Street bisected the town and development didnt extend much beyond the area bordered by Princess and Dock streets on the north and south Water to Fourth Street on the west and east. In the early 1730s Wilmingtons streets were laid out much in the fashion of nearby Brunswick Town. Only Wilmington one-mile square a shadow of what it would become in a few short years. No Wrightsville Beach Castle Hayne or Kure Beach. Looking at New Hanover County today its hard to envision the tree-covered towns and undeveloped communities amid the tangled web of roads.

Let’s quickly go over what each of these variables are. ![]() The \(x\) and \(y\) position changes along the path, with \(x_0\) and \(y_0\) marking the starting point.įor every projectile motion problem we’ll have a set of variables in each direction. This is because the motion in the \(x\) and \(y\) components are independent of each other.įor example, at every point along the path of motion here, there is a velocity in the \(x\) direction and a velocity in the \(y\) direction. When we’re working with projectile motion, we are dealing with vectors like velocity and acceleration, which we break up into the \(x\) and \(y\) components. You’ll want to determine your starting point, end point, and the path of travel. Using the three equations of motion in Physics, we derived the equation for the time to reach the maximum height from the first equation of motion in Physics. Even an approximation can be helpful in visualizing the situation. The object is called a projectile, and its path is called its trajectory. Is all of the motion vertical, like an object falling to the ground? Or is the object launched or thrown at some angle? It helps to draw out the trajectory if it isn’t already given to you. Projectile motion is the motion of an object thrown (projected) into the air when, after the initial force that launches the object, air resistance is negligible and the only other force that object experiences is the force of gravity. This means that the only force acting on it is the force of gravity. In other words, consider the direction the object is moving. The equations that we are using to solve this problem only apply when the projectile is in free fall. When you begin a projectile motion problem, the first thing you’ll have to do is think about the trajectory of the object. Our ability to predict these values depends on the information we have about the scenario. One of the easiest ways to deal with 2D projectile motion is to just analyze the motion in each direction separately. ![]() V o is the initial velocity sin is the component along the y-axis cos is the component along the x-axis The formula of projectile motion is used to calculate the velocity, distance and time observed in the projectile motion of the object. With physics, it’s possible to predict things like where the object will land and the amount of time it will take for the object to reach the ground. Equations related to the projectile motion is given as. ![]() Projectile motion occurs any time an object is thrown or launched into the air and falls back to the ground. Hi, and welcome to this video on projectile motion! Today, we’ll discuss what projectile motion is and break down some important concepts. Now there are six touring shows of symphonic game music, Noone said. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the first game-music concert: The Tokyo Strings Ensemble performed “Dragon Quest” at Tokyo’s Suntory Hall in August 1987. “And then when they walk out on stage and the audience treats them like they’re The Rolling Stones.” She still sometimes encounters snobbism from orchestras: “They saw ‘Pong’ once and that’s video game music to them, you know?”īut “halfway through the first rehearsal, their attitude has changed,” she adds. “This is crazy to think of: Today, more young people are listening to orchestral music through the medium of their video game consoles than have ever listened to orchestral music.” “I predict that in 15 years’ time it will be a main staple of the orchestral season,” she said. She said game music is where movie music was 15 years ago: well on its way to being completely accepted. “That is part of the reason why this music has a place in people’s hearts and has survived,” Noone said of game tunes. Think “da-da-da-duh” - the opening of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. Noone, known herself for musical work on “World of Warcraft,” “Overwatch” and other games, says the technological limitations of early consoles - tiny memories, rudimentary chips, crude sounds - forced composers “to distill their melodies down to the absolute kernels of what melodic content can be, because they had to program it note by note.”īut simple often also means memorable. Kondo was the first person Nintendo hired specifically to compose music for its games, according to the 2013 book, “Music and Game.” Their take on the tune speaks to the sub-culture of remixing game music, with thousands of redos uploaded by fans to sites like - dedicated, it says, “to the appreciation and promotion of video game music as an art form.”īased on the Russian folk song “Korobeiniki,” the music of the 1984 game “Tetris” has similarly undergone umpteen remixes - including “Tetris Meets Metal,” with more than 2.2 million views on YouTube.īy 1985, the can’t-not-tap-along-to-this theme of “Super Mario Bros.,” the classic adventure of plumber Mario and his brother Luigi, was bringing fame for composer Koji Kondo, also known for his work on “Legend of Zelda.” Both are on the bill for the “Retrogaming” concert in Paris. For fun, check out the 2013 remix by Dweezil Zappa, son of Frank, and game music composer Tommy Tallarico. Namco’s “Pac-Man,” two years later, whetted appetites with an opening musical chirp. The heartbeat-like bass thump of Taito’s “Space Invaders” in 1978, which got ever faster as the aliens descended, caused sweaty palms and was habit-forming. Game music scholars - yes, they exist - point to key milestones on the path to the surround-sound extravaganzas of games today. Dating the birth of game music depends on how one defines music. ![]() Later games would take wilder swings such as Timeless River in Kingdom Hearts 2, Tron in the same game and the Country Of The Musketeers in Dream Drop Distance, but this first game was very much something that they wanted to keep as simple as possible when it came to world design. The first game sticks very specifically in the realms of what could be easily defined as Disney Classics, with movies ranging from The Nightmare Before Christmas to The Little Mermaid to Alice In Wonderland represented. That’s something we all tried to stay within certain boundaries on.” Analysing The Disney Influence ![]() The only thing we were careful of doing was staying within the characters’ established roles and what kind of dialog these characters should have. It was more us trying to bring out the best of what is already made as far as Disney characters go. Disney has its worlds already created, and there’s no reason for us to change that, so it wasn’t to a point where they had to lead us and take our hands. There weren’t any big restrictions or a set of guidelines we were given. There’s also some fun visual quirks, such as your swimming animation completely changing after visiting Atlantica to be more dolphin-like.Īs it turns out, Nomura and the team didn’t really have much in the way of boundaries choosing worlds, as documented in a 2005 interview with xPlay: These choices were made as an attempt to reflect the character development of Sora and the gang, with him growing more as a person throughout visiting all of these worlds. That first game has you visiting Atlantica, Deep Jungle, Wonderland, Olympus Coliseum, Agrabah, Monstro, Halloween Town, Neverland and 100 Acre Wood. Kingdom Hearts is best known (well, outside of the baffling storyline) for the ability to visit different Disney worlds and interact with their respective characters. And I thought no, I guess this wouldn’t work, huh?” It was this chainsaw-like weapon that I had a rough sketch of when I first showed my concepts to Disney.Įveryone got this scrunched-up look on their face and nobody said a word in the entire room. “The first weapon I showed Disney was a chainsaw. It was a chainsaw, as Nomura elaborates on: Yet the original intent wasn’t a key at all. There’s multiple different designs, but the one that people tend to think of is the Kingdom Key. When Kingdom Hearts is brought up, people tend to think of Sora’s weapon, the Keyblade. Originally though, he was going to be part lion, with a tail and lion ears, though this was quickly turned into the design we ended up with in the final game. Sora has white gloves, red shorts and massive yellow shoes, There’s still the DNA of Final Fantasy characters here, with massive spiky hair, a ton of chains and some absolutely wild dialogue. Nomura didn’t want to make a game about either of those, and managed to get Disney and Square Enix to agree to let him use a completely original character in the form of what would become Sora.Įven after getting them to agree to allowing an original character, Nomura still decided to mix some Disney DNA into the design of Sora. To begin with, Square Enix wanted to make a game about Mickey Mouse (which will make a lot of decisions discussed later make a lot more sense), but Disney wanted to make a game about Donald Duck. The person from Disney was in on the idea and said, “Since it’s stylized, it would be best if there are Disney characters that are known world-wide.” It was a great opportunity, as if it was destined.” Putting Mickey Into The Mix I offered my hand and said, “If that’s the case, since I have an idea I want to do, please let me do this.” “I want to make an action game with stylized characters,” I remember vaguely thinking to myself at that time. Sakaguchi (Executive Producer: Hironobu Sakaguchi) about what kind of game to make. Coincidentally, I was in the same place talking to Mr. Business administrator: Shinji Hashimoto) was speaking to a person from Disney. “The producer Hashimoto (Square Co., Ltd. In an Ultimania interview, Tetsuya Nomura, the director of Kingdom Hearts said the following: Square Enix only really had Final Fantasy and the nature of that series meant that there was no fixed main character that could become a mascot. Nintendo had Mario, SEGA had Sonic, Microsoft had Master Chief. In the early 2000s, Square Enix wanted a game that could rival other franchises in terms of mascot.
